Finding an Emergency Room When You Need it Most
If you’re like me, when I’m away from home—whether near or far—I research a destination in advance to find the nearest emergency room (ER). It’s just smart to do (yet maybe a little crazy, but here’s why…). While on vacation several years ago, we experienced one of our son’s anaphylactic reactions, believing we knew the location of the nearest ER—only to discover it was just a small urgent care clinic that had already closed for the night. All was ok, but this added obstacle could have been avoided.
As you may know, experiencing an allergic reaction can be a distressing experience. Immediate access to emergency medical care is crucial. So, when I discovered a tool designed specifically for this purpose…
I’ve been telling everyone I know – and teaching my adolescent son how the tool works.
It’s the findERnow app, developed by Massachusetts General Hospital's Emergency Medicine Network (EMNet). This app helps users quickly locate the nearest ER across the United States. And the app is kept up-to-date by leveraging the National Emergency Department Inventory (NEDI-USA), which has the most current data on 24/7 ER’s nationwide.
findERnow utilizes your smartphone device's GPS to provide a comprehensive, real-time map of nearby ERs. Upon launching the app, users are presented with a map displaying the closest ERs, accompanied by essential details such as distance and estimated driving time. This immediate visualization allows for swift decision-making during emergencies.
And get this — EMS crews also use this app. There is a toggle you can select for a special "EMS View" to evaluate the type of ER per facility. Each ER is classified as either "Advanced" or "Basic" — enabling you as well to see what type of ER facility you’re in need of, depending on the emergency.
Key Features?
Comprehensive ER Database: The app maintains an extensive and continuously updated database of ERs nationwide. This ensures that users have access to accurate information about the nearest medical facilities, regardless of their location.
Pediatric Emergency Care Indicators: findERnow highlights ERs equipped for pediatric emergencies. Facilities prepared for pediatric care are marked with a dark blue baby icon, indicating the presence of pediatric trauma centers, burn centers, or dedicated pediatric emergency care coordinators.
Detailed Facility Information: Beyond location data, findERnow provides insights into each ER's capabilities, including annual visit volumes and specialized services like trauma or burn centers. This information can be crucial when seeking appropriate care during an allergic reaction or specific medical needs.
User-Friendly Interface: The app's user-friendly design ensures that even in high-stress situations, users can effortlessly navigate to find the nearest ER. The straightforward interface minimizes the time spent searching for critical information.
Best of all, it’s FREE
